AIR AMBULANCE

They said 100% after deductible with no caveats other than up to the limit of our coverage, which is orders of magnitude higher than $40K. It's Blue Cross / Blue Shield.

My AIG policy says reasonable and customary expenses to the limit of the coverage, as per the recommendation of the attending physician, with the ins co notified as soon as possible. Transport is from the place of injury to the nearest adequate facility (and also covers later transfer from one facility to another if medically necessary). Escort or attendant is also covered (to the policy limit) if such is recommended by the doc.

It also covers repatriation of remains, and some death and dismemberment benefits. The rest is generally oriented around travel insurance and has a bunch of coverages for handling flight/boat related issues, and overseas destinations. I suspect my version of the policy is cheaper because its domestic travel and I have no down payments on tickets and reservations.

When I wrecked in 2018 the ambulance service was a wholly different billing system than the hospital- the hospital stay was covered pretty well (only cost me $4k). IIRC I ended up paying the entire ambulance bill, it took a few months for all the billing and payment stuff to work out. I have an inch thick pile of the accumulated billing stuff in a binder, the complexity of these systems is breathtaking.

The AFLAC coverage I was paying for was entirely useless- all claims declined and no humans to discuss it with no matter what I did so I gave up on it and cancelled later. Motorcycle ins screwed me out of any benefits related to the impound fees, nearly new helmet and the jacket they cut me out of... complete radio silence after I signed the check for totalling the bike. Get that stuff in writing before you sign anything!

I also have Blue Cross / Blue Shield and the helo ride from the Alpine Hospital to the Tier 1 Trauma Unit in Odessa TX has been denied by BC/BS.

Air Med Care is filing an appeal for me. it has been 80 days at this point so far, and still no resolution.....

Oh man I hate the insurance appeal stuff... we've been thru it with Blue Cross/Carefirst a number of times for our daughter's crohns (thankfully in remission).
