Garage makeover time! Our garage is empty and a complete blank slate!!

Open to all suggestions and lets see your garage setups.

Questions:
-anyone do some type of wall armoring like wainscoting? We are hard on our walls for some reason
-Floor coatings? I was thinking whatever they use in aviation hangars. Ideas?

Done:
-walls refinished/painted
-Fleximounts (Awesome!!)
-Electrical outlets (110's all over the place and a 220 panel) we charge a plug-in hybrid.

To Do List:
-Floor coating
-Ceiling lights
-Heat
-Utility sink
-Gear Wall
-Storage
-Workbench
-Motorcycle table (Have a Ural to put on it too).
-Organize rolling toolboxes (Craftsmans; One for homeowner crap, one for garden crap, one for tools).

Not sure what your plans are for lighting, but I installed ten of these in my garage:

completely transformed the entire workspace. Its like working in an operating room.

Those look great!

Wife is insisting on dimmable LED in soft white.... ugh...

There is an access panel to ample attic space above, I think I'll do something like what you posted on one switch, and what she wants on a dedicated dimmable switch.

I'm getting older and man I can't get enough light.

I have all the workbenches, tables, toolboxes, machinery, etc, all on casters. Things change over the years, and it makes it easy to adjust the space accordingly. Makes for easier sweeping and vacuuming too. Lots of electrical outlets. Two ceiling fans. LED lighting is wonderful.
I have a dehumidifier that almost feels like A/C during the summer and a pellet stove for the winter.

Da' UP, eh!? (Upper Michigan)
If you are anywhere that you get "real" winter, the number one item on your list should be a heat source.

You can have the fanciest garage in the world, but if it's too cold six months out of the year, you'll never spend any time in it.

We get a solid six months of snow where I live, and I have a full sized forced air furnace in the corner of my 2.5 car garage. It can take the garage temp from 40 degrees to 60 in a matter of minutes.

It's by far the most valuable item in my garage.

Forgot to put that on the list.

We have mild winters but the garage still gets into the 30's... no bueno.

I prefer a natural color temperature (easier on the eyes), but why dimmable? Maybe there's a good reason, but I can't think of it.

I have three 8' high output florescent fixtures in my garage, with one blocked by the overhead door when it's open. I put that one on a separate switch so I don't have it on with the door open. I'd go with LED lighting today, but that wasn't available when I installed mine.

I have the other pair of fixtures in line with the cars, but biased to the outer sides so the cars don't shade along the walls, with the third (overhead door) at a right angle to the other two. That arrangement was the best configuration to kill shadows with three fixtures in the shop. I have a pair of screw bulb fixtures on a motion sensing switch to augment the door operator's light, so there's always decent lighting when entering the garage.

Is your overhead door insulated? If not, that should help. How about the walls and ceiling?

Before spending a lot on a heater, give a 1500W oil filled radiator style portable heater a try. A simple one costs around $50, isn't affected by dust, is nearly silent, and is less likely to be an ignition source compared to other options.

T-111 plywood siding is durable and looks pretty good. OSB (waferwood) is also used, but I don't think it looks as good. Use PVC trim and it should hold up to most anything you throw at it.

Epoxy. Sherwin-Williams is a good place to look. The importance of good floor prep can't be overstated.

Done:
-walls refinished/painted
-Fleximounts (Awesome!!)
-Electrical outlets (110's all over the place and a 220 panel) we charge a plug-in hybrid.
If you have any aspirations for welding, keeping some space free near the 220 outlet would be a good idea.

To Do List:
-Floor coating
-Ceiling lights
-Heat
-Utility sink
If you already have supply and waste lines for it, that's nice. You'll have to keep the heat on or set it up so the lines can be blown out/drained.

-Gear Wall
-Storage
I like the flexibility of at least one run of a track system near the top of the walls. I used Rubbermaid FastTrak, but there are others. I also used wire shelving due to cost and strength, plus they don't collect dust.

There are good deals on shelving and cabinets at store closings when they liquidate their displays. Some of that stuff is seriously stout.

-Workbench
-Motorcycle table (Have a Ural to put on it too).

That's a nice space, and I like your door operators. Tidy and out of the way.
If you want an air conditioner or air compressor, you might put some thought into where they'd live.

Dimmable because mama said so. Happy wife…..😁 she likes to sit in the garage with music and a glass of wine.

I’ll do soft white LED’s on an existing switch, and put blinding LED’s for me on a separate switch.
