Replacing the radio-operated key battery

This would seem to be a simple thing but noooooo. I cannot seem to separate the key case as per BMW's instructions. The portion of the case that covers the battery is on there so tight that it seems as though I'll break it before getting the friggin' thing off. What's the trick?
