What's new

What did you do in your garage today?

My Day started positive and went kind of downhill fairly rapid, i decided to make a start on investigating the engine a Nissan D22 navara ( With Ill Runaway engine )project truck i have had a wile now, in my defence here its only been home a week or so and i have already took the rear tub body off ready for my short tray back build and it being a clear day today decided to look at the engine and make a start on the front seat swaps i have decided on.

Truck was a £200 purchase i wanted to fit a vw sdi2.5 litre five cylinder AGX motor i have here in my old van, but found out its dual mass flywheel clutch so conversion will be near impossible given my budget and funds.
So i decided to take a provisional look at the ill fatted stock Nissan YD25 engine, and quick look at the turbo by just taking off the pipe showed it had lots of play and probably ran off the engine oil it drank from the blown turbo.
Itv allegedley ran, but did not see no point in stressing it further and risk throwing a rod if as i suspect they failed during the runaway, the YD25 and its Younger bigger brother the ZD30 are prone to cracking conrods accross the oilway on the big end and i guess its indeed done this on at least one of them.
So Failed turbo confirmed i went on to just try turning the motor by hand, amd it moved but only about 15 degrees then it stopped and turning it backwards it did exactly the same so its posible i just did not push it through compresion or more likeley its got something gone out of sinch inside a valve or even a cam broken .. somethings amiss i believe.
I always wanted to convert this truck rather than repair the stock motor. I had planned the five cylinder vw diesel, but now i am just not sure which way to jump.
I have seen a few Toyota hilux TDI 1.9 vw conversions, and they seem to work well enough in these light jap trucks, however i dont have a donor car with a 1.9tdi in it, but i do have a skoda fabia wagon with a 1.4TDI the same basic TDI engine but three cylinders and 1422cc 75 bhp.
My instinct screams "no its too small".
But then i started to doubt my judgement and looked at the spec figures and things did not look quite as bad.
Nissan D22 navara
Weight. of short trayback double cab, 3700lbs
2.5
HP 133 @3600RPM
Torque 304nm @2000RPM
Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI Estate.
weight 2600lbs lbs
HP 75BHP @ 4000rpm
Torque 195nm @ 2200rpm
I would estimate the YD25 engine weight 340lbs
The 1.4 TDI weighs 240LBS
so we are talking 1000lbs heavier and half the hp and 2 thirds of the torque at a higher rpm

Here is the 1.9 VWTDI power numbers for comparison as there are a good few 1.9tdi hilux swaps on the www and i will atach a video of one below .
1.9TDI
HP 103 hp @4000RPM
torque 250 nm @1900RPM
Weight 370lbs

Dont know. Its Down in every respect but i already own it its here and i know i can fit it in the truck, Thoughts all, ?

I had an old 1974 F100 ford truck. The engine was a 360 or 5.9 liter. Nice setup. Recently I thought about building the same truck with a 2.3 4 cylinder and 5 speed. We never got the cosworths just the pinto engine. Which was used for decades in various models. I researched the conversion. The mustangs ran both the v8 and 4 cylinder. What I found was the F100 was sold in other countries with a 2.3L. The 2.3 is only 85hp but it was enough in other countries. And it was used in the ranger here. What is the axle ratio might be the best question for your install.

Not looed at the axle ratios yet, its not like the option to swap ratios exists on my budget, the best i can hope for is a used std ratio if ever i need one. Rather than axle ratios i was thinking wheels and tyres, its running 20s at the moment with 270/55/20 and i want to go 16 inch with 205 80 16 or even 15 inch with 205 80 15s . I dont need aggresive off road tyres either basic van road pattern tyres will do all i need, i only go on grass fields up on to river banks fox shooting etc, i am always carefull and its very rare i ever get stuck.
The 1.4TDI is a disproportionately small engine for any truck, and i know it will limit what i can do with the truck workwise but i like the lower weight and fact its a triple and triples alway pull well for their size, i ran the car for years and indeed have another i am just puting back on the road soon. They are torquey for a 1.4tdi and i would say pull like a 1.6 diesel rather than 1422cc.
I can not realisticly loose much weight off the truck, the rear tub weighed probably 300lbs and wont ever have been as aerodynamic as a short fray body .
Big killer for the 1.4 is the fact i wanted to build a dismountable camper body for this truck, and with a 1.4 its just not going to cope with the extra weight or wind so its probably a non starter, but of late the likes of isuzu in the D max are in these times moving from 2.5 and 3 litres to 1.9 litres and they seem to handle trailer work ok.
I dont know if building the old YD25 is sencible financilaly they are a known bad egg and i feel the sort of money spent on a rebuild would be better spent on an old mercedes om606 or om605 and buy a bigger pump like the 8mm from diesel pumps uk , this is a polar oposite to my 1.4tdi idea, but its got power and some more and if i am spending a big lump of money i want good not warmed up left overs i know long term will be a problem again.
Here is a taster of what an OM606 could be and it includes a acctual users insight into the dreaded woes of the faliure prone ZD30, my YD25v is basicaly a 2.5 litre version of the same bad dream ZD30 (3 litre).

Motorcycles are a joke compared to working on vehicles. This was so easy.

New fluids all around. New front tire. New front rotors and pads. Rear tire and pads this weekend and she should be ready to roll.

Stator wire into the primary had a bit of a seep on it. Apparently that's Harleys doing Harley things. I threw some ThreeBond on it. See if it holds. Otherwise primary cover is coming off and I'm tackling that from the inside.

Thats because modern= not setting the bump in the taper bearing shim stack. Plug and play. I enjoyed the end float part of harleys.

Just everything on motorcycles in general though. I've been busting my ass on 20+ year old vehicles for a long time now. I've must have had a wrench in my hand every day since January. It just doesn't stop. Laying in the mud, the cold, dealing with all the rust and bent over seats and consoles. The bikes....I sit on a stool and everything is right there.

You live in the salted areas? That does suck. I spent over a decade in the north. Laying on a piece of cardboard on ice was not fun. And needed torches for all the siezed fasteners.

Yes, motorcycles are a nice break.

I'm in the heart of the rust belt, heh.

We had the tools at work. But driveway repairs took hours for simple stuff. It takes a hardened individual to live up there. I miss some things. The long daylight hrs in late June were awesome for riding.

So finally checked my battery tender and….yeah it was a little burnt inside. Hasn’t noticeably done anything in a few years now so picked up an tender/charger to replace

Also it’s a perfect day for machining some parts!

Welp. That was a shit show.

Carrier bearing in the truck showed up. Worked on that starting at 8am. By 10, I had the grinder out cutting the bearing race off. Wearing glasses, still managed to get something lodged into my eye. Dropped everything and look, saw something in there. Off to the ER.

Wait two hours. They tell me they can't help. I need to see an eye specialist tomorrow. Just show up. ya. right. I'm sure if I needed drugs they'd hook me right up though.

Get home around 1pm. Eye all messed up. Welp, truck still needs work. Cut the race off, get the shaft in the press, pop out the old one.

Spend and hour trying to get the new one pressed on with a pipe. The entire unit won't fit in the press. Get that squared away. Lube up the slip yoke. Mount up the ends. Go to mount up the new carrier bearing. Bolt holes aren't even close.

The bearing is identical, but the mounting surface is different. My dumbass only looked at the bearing itself, not the mounting holes.

So this entire day was a waste. Popped the shaft off, threw it in the Vitara. I'm just going to take it down to a driveline place. Have them do it. Have them balance it and throw all new u-joints in it. I'm done with this shit. Just give me the part to bolt in. Wasted an entire fucking day trying to save some money. so mad

We all have had those shit show days. Best of luck with the eye Fixer.

I recently bought the tool on the left to crimp some 6ga lugs on a sxs. Because I could not find the tool on the right.

Guess I have two now.

Back just before covid I had occasion to do up a bunch of some 1 AWG cabling. I started out putting on the lugs with a hydraulic crimper but after the first few I switched to solder pellets which was a MUCH better solution. Just need the pre-figured pellet for whatever the wire gauge is, its prefluxed so heat the lug until it melts and in goes the stripped cable end, and some fancy heatshrink over the works. OTOH it does need the lugs to be a cup so the molten solder doesn't run out...
