I noticed this a lot before Christmas.
From Fairytale of New York. "You're cheap and you're haggard" doesn't have the same ring to it. At least they kept "Old slut on junk".
To Baby it's cold outside. "Is that a wink."
Sounds off when you know the original lyrics.

A contemporary example would be Scorpions, replacing "I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park" with “Now listen to my heart, it says Ukraine”.

I think 1984 was meant to be a warning, a piece of fiction of what might be, not a bloody guide book
