What's new

- Week Alabama, it's not like they said!

We took a break and enjoyed the scenic spot.

It was a dead end so we went back the way we came. More mud hole pics:

We took a detour to Coker Creek Falls.

P4230040 (2).JPG

We did the short hike to the falls. Coker Creek Falls is a series of falls. This was the first.

P4230041 (2).JPG

I woke up a snake when I nearly stepped on it.

P4230043 (2).JPG

It was pretty big but we don't think it was poisonous.

Another of the Falls.

Hiking back to the parking area.

We headed to Reliance for lunch. I forget the name of this place but its across the bridge from the gas station.

P4230049 (2).JPG

Some other guys from the rally were already there.

P4230050 (2).JPG

The food was good but not cheap. Dave had the fried bologna sandwich and said it was the most expensive bologna sandwich he ever had.

Heading back out after lunch.

P4230051 (2).JPG

I headed over to the gas station. Dave crossing the bridge over the Hiwassee River.

P4230052 (2).JPG

With a 2 gallon tank I don't like passing up a gas station although I could have skipped it and finished the ride.

P4230053 (2).JPG

Our next stop was the alien landing pad in the middle of the forest.

P4230060 (2).JPG

The government doesn't want us to know about the aliens so they photoshopped a pic showing a building on top of the pad and said it was a concrete plant or something like that. We know better

I guess the aliens were tired last time they were here and strung a hammock.

Tab tries out the hammock.

We staged the bikes.

After checking out the alien stuff we headed off before the aliens returned and kidnapped us. Our next destination was the leaky pipe.

P4230077 (2).JPG

.

P4230079 (2).JPG

This pipe connects the Appalachia Dam to a powerhouse 12 miles down the river. The pipe is over 8 miles long and is mostly drilled through the mountains. This is just a short sections that is exposed as it runs across a valley between mountains. It has some small leaks so we call it the leaky pipe. We discussed what a project this must have been with 1940s technology.

Or maybe they got help from the Aliens:lol3

We rode down to the railroad tracks. which run along the Hiwassee River.

P4230081 (2).JPG

I was hoping no train would come along while I was on the bridge.

P4230083 (2).JPG

P4230085 (2).JPG

Heading back out we came to a three way intersection with bikes coming from all three directions. We were out in the middle of nowhere and it felt like we needed to install a traffic light

More pavement riding.

P4230105 (2).JPG

We got on 68 where we rode some more good curves before I pulled off the side of the road.

P4230106 (2).JPG

One of the few legal Single Track trails in the area. Everyone else was on big bikes but Dave and Tab were up for riding it. It really wasn't that challenging.

We stopped to wait for Dave. It wasn't long before we heard that booming Harley engine.

Then it was time to head for the campground. We took a gravel road to 68. 68 is a fun road but it didn't take too long to get stuck behind slow moving traffic. I pulled over and let the traffic get down the road before continuing at a fun pace

We bypassed Tellico and rode some more country roads.

That was it for my riding on this trip but a big part of the fun for an event like this is hanging out with the other riders.

P4230116 (2).JPG

Michael's bike was loaded up on Kenny's trailer.

P4240119 (2).JPG

Kenny took the AT back to his home in Virginia where he would store it Michael figured out what to do with it. I think he was going to let his insurance company sort it out. Michael hitched a ride with an inmate back to Michigan who delivered him to the Canadian border. It turns out Michael broke his collarbone, had several broken ribs and a puntured and slightly collapsed lung:eek7. Michael was very grateful and impressed with all the help he got from others at the rally.

I ended up talking with Tab and Dave until around 1:30.

After staying up way past my bed time on Saturday night

I still got up pretty early on Sunday morning.

P4240120 (2).JPG

I was way too tired to even think about doing any riding. I did wander around the campground.

I was ready in case an "interesting" picture opportunity presented itself but everything went smoothly.

These KTM's were seriously loaded down. I think they probably weighed about as much as an unloaded Gold Wing

I waited until things dried out then packed up and headed for home.

Some thoughts about this rally. One of the things I wondered about before the rally was whether the VS takeover would be discussed and what would that discussion be like. It didn't come up much. I asked a few people and they knew about it but didn't seem too concerned. I know at least three other people at the rally are on this forum since they responded on the rally thread on this forum. I think that most people came to the rally to ride and meet other riders. Many were noobs on ADVr and at least one wasn't even on the forum.

I always enjoy meeting other riders and this was no exception. I knew some of the people there having met them in person before or at least interacted wth them on the forum. I also met a lot of new people. I'm glad I went.

In reality, what is that big concrete structure? If you don't want to tell me, just say what it is called and I can google it. OK?

Ha ha. You mean ready-mix trucks were not running out from Chattanooga and Knoxville to pour the bazillion yards in all those hydro-power structures? ;)

Time for another local ride in Alabama. This one would be in and near the Bankhead National Forest. Someone else would be leading this ride so I could just show up and ride without doing any planing or thinking:-)

The meeting spot was the Danville Gas station. I arrived right at the meeting time and as usual a bunch of people were already there.

Natalee was on her new (to her) Super Sherpa.

P4300007 (2).JPG

Preston was on his new AT.

David's XT226 died shortly before getting to the gas station and he had to do the ride of shame.

P4300010 (2).JPG

There were plenty of people willing to document the occasion:D

P4300011 (2).JPG

A plan was made to rescue David's Xt226. In the meantime another bike had a problem.
