What's new

Show us something you made.

Some lumber from a poplar I took down that I turned in to a picture frame for a piece of art my wife bought me for Christmas. Still can't get a tight miter to save my ass but the corner bowties turned out nice and tight. Bright green now, but the green will turn a nice tobacco color after about a year.

High school machine shop class (2nd year) our final project was a machine. I decided to make something I could use. That was 1978. There are buffing wheels, grind stone, and a wire wheel that have been used over the years. The cord had seen better days. So, about a week ago I replaced the cord, switch, cover plate, belt, grease fittings, and grinding wheel. The original grinding wheel is a made in the USA Craftsman.

Having taken a welding class two years earlier, I did all the welding myself. Bronze bushings under the grease fitting had 0.001 inch clearance at the time of grading. Now, the clearance has opened up. Dad had harvested an electric motor from an old dryer and it was just sitting on a shelf; so, that would be the driver.

Pretty nice to have the use of machines.

I’m still working on this in stages. Put everything on hold until we get enough warm and dry days to powerwash, then stain the lower section and use deck paint on the upper. GFCI outlets are in a couple of locations and Water is at the fountain. I rebuilt the swing, but still have to stain, re-assemble and re-hang.

Lower deck is 17' W x 12' D (attached to 7' D covered porch). Upper deck is 20' W x 15' D. The darkest part has been there for over 30 years (2 x 6 planks - deteriorated too much for stain, but still plenty strong, so thick Sherwin-Williams Deck & Dock coating it will be).

Needed a thumb rest for the bass. Milled this out.

Then sandblasted the recesses and polished the rest for sorta faux cast look. Walked around with it in my jeans pocket for a while to knock down the polish a little.

While I was at it I figured I could remake the black plastic truss rod out of aluminum as well. Just belt sanding and hand files for the bevels.

Happy with that. Let's go play!

…. for her chickens of course :rofl

A few weeks ago I needed to make a custom motor mount to put a motor in a vehicle it wasn’t meant for….. so I 3D scanned the block, threw it in Fusion 3D and cut it out on the plasma cutter

I had this Bluetooth speaker and it sucked. Waterproof, so the speaker was buried under everything and sounded muffled and bleh.

Made a new housing to swap the electronicals in to. Looks cool, sounds better and the wife gave it the, "Aw, it's cute!" stamp of approval, so... 👍

Is that oak. The grain is awesome. So straight it looks like a laminate. I wish I could get some of our drops out to you. I never really thought about combining my electric hobbies with wood..

Cool! The lower left leg of the mount looks like a piece of c channel.

Yellow poplar. Oak is strong, but the grain isn't dense. I figured poplar's dense grain would work good for the skinny speaker grill thingys.

I am trying to knock down a cull pile...I built the wife a a scrapping bench. She likes to find and tear things apart for a hobby. I think there is more copper than wood in this pic. The bench weighs 300lbs plus..I call it Goliath.

But I started a new project...the smallest work bench I ever built. Take me months to finish.
