The DR650 Thread

Nice! The most dangerous thing about procycle is that they maintain your cart selections. I have a few hundred bucks worth of stuff just sitting there, but have been resisting the temptation. Bonus is coming in ... might be time to check out. Mostly boring stuff, wheel bearing set, timing inspection covers, front brake lever because my current one is bent. I have a strong urge to add a procycle ss header so I don't have to worry about grinding the welds on mine.

I was running 15/46 and just converted to 14/42 on account of the fact I was having some clearance issues w/ my SW center stand. Bike is still receiving her winter beauty treatment so I haven't been out with it.

14/42 and a 320mm(?) rotor? :D

14/42 indeed.. pretty sure the original chain from 2000 is still on my bike, LOL. it's actually not too bad (no sticking, kinking, etc) other than surface rust on the outside but it's been long overdo for a change. no rotor, just new pads and steel lines for the front.

oh yeah it is dangerous, I've had the brake kit and chain kit in my cart for weeks, decided to pull the trigger after two very lucky nights at the casino. I also grabbed some D20 dryspec sidebags from Revzilla and a heat shield. looks like they should work perfect as long as I can get them mounted up properly.

I have the dryspec heat shield and I think it's the best product available. Test the waters carefully when it comes to running saddle bags on these bikes because the exhaust side plastic cover can go melty in a pretty big hurry.

edit: ... and they cost an obnoxious $100 a piece, heat shield tape stuff excluded.

that's the one I purchased as well, hoping it works well.

Bike is all ready to rock. Supposed to be in the 50s today. Love to go for a rip, but not sure how I'm going to get the back back up to the house. Third of a mile of snow and ice. Thinking maybe dump it into the front end loader and haul it back that way.

I'm not even sure where that is.

I'm way up and to the right.

Ended up not being able to ride today. because reasons.

For you guys that run windscreens, what do you like? I'm getting older and long days of slab are starting to wear on me. So much so I even started looking at the new KLR. DAMN! What am I thinking? I finally come back to reality, and am now searching for something I can add or remove when needed. I currently have on a parabellum rally, and even though I really like the looks of it, I doesn't agree with me. The air is focused right at the base of my helmet and the noise and turbulence is unforgiving. So much so I can't even see straight at 60 mph.

I made one out of a plastic trash can.

Made a template out of cardboard and a heat gun to soften the plastic a little. Just used heavy duty Velcro to hold it there. It was solid, never moved.

However, I'm do damned tall and my seat is so high (SeatConcepts Tall with 1" added) it blew the wind right at my face. I'd need a screen like 4' tall to get it over me so I removed it.

If you're shorter, its like $12 to make and would work awesome.

I believe I'll give that a try. A little investment in time and dollars wouldn't be too bad. Beats throwing big dollars at things that may or may not work well. Fairly tall myself so like you, anything short of a barn door may not be sufficient.

Slipstreamer

Easy to remove at the camp for trail riding. adjustable, inexpensive and gives away if you get your head into it.

Fiddly to mount and adjust, the longer you use it, the better it stays in place.

Almost everyone I know of that has checked has found them barely tight. Will they back out? Maybe, and that is what you want to eliminate any possibility of.
I still haven't safety-wired the NSU. 37K on the bike. Should I be worried?

meh, half a day's job to check. maybe a full day of there is gasket scraping involved.

Couldn't you just thread-lock them? Do you have to take the clutch plates out? Do you need a special tool?

I suppose I ought to get it done.
you can, yea. I safety wired mine. was easy to do. I bought two allen head screws, drilled them, roll of safety wire. its like $5 total.

I took my clutch out. its one of those things that if you try to save time, it will just ending up taking more time.

Many tutorials out there on this and yes, locktite is just fine. It's what I used. Just be sure to degrease the threads in the case as well as the bolts and locktite will hold just fine.
